I Can’t Defend the Crystal Police On This
By Andrew Richter
Has the 4th Amendment to the Constitution been repealed recently? Take a look at these new proposals that the police department is pushing in the city of Crystal from the May 20 work session;
No person may leave a motor vehicle, except commercial motor vehicles engaged in loading or unloading, unattended upon any street, alley, used car lot, or unattended parking lot, without first stopping the vehicle, and rendering it inoperable and removing the key from the ignition or the fob from the activation area.
So let understand this right, if your keys are in your car, the police have the right to enter? What are they doing looking in people’s cars anyway? YOUR car is YOUR property, the police have no right to look inside without cause!
So the police can then break into your car and take your keys to the police department? What if it is -10 out? Can you imagine coming out and seeing your keys gone and taken by the police or that the police came by and locked you out of your car???? Also keep in mind that the ordinance says that “finds a motor vehicle standing unattended with the ignition key in the vehicle.” Notice it doesn’t say that the car is running or the key is actually in the ignition!
Now it’s probably not a good idea to leave your keys in your car. BUT that shouldn’t be an excuse for the police to take your keys, lock you out of your car, or perhaps search your car!
This is despicable, and so is anyone who votes for this. My worry is that under the current council, a proposal like this may pass. Mark Hoffman and Joe Selton have never met a rule, tax, regulation, or law they didn’t like and John Budziszewski will do whatever they do. So my guess is this is one vote short of passing!
Get on the horn and oppose this folks!!!! Don’t let this city violate our constitutional rights! And city of Crystal Police Department; if you take my keys out of my car, I’ll sue you and sue the council members who vote for this.
Of course it’s on the very last page……172.
