Mike Opat Should Apologize

Today at 4:19 pm in a post on Twitter, Hennepin County Commissioner, Mike Opat, said the following” Hey @BirdtownClub, great news for Bottineau LRT! Today, $26m approved by Counties Transit Board (CTIB) to develop project. Unstoppable now! ”

First off, let me remind you of a couple of things.

1) You hold a non-partisan office. You are elected to office by Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Libertarians, and anyone else. You were elected to represent all of those people.

2) A large portion of those people you represent are not in favor of light rail (especially the Bottineau line) because it will disrupt their community and/or their budget. Many people in your district are on fixed incomes, and you are too happily spending tens of millions of their tax money, whether from the County Transit Improvement Board (CTIB) or the Hennepin County Railroad Authority (HCRA). Some of these people even put in time and sweat to work for a cause they believe in (i.e. stopping it).

3) Whether you agree with the folks that are against light rail or not, as their elected representative, don’t you owe it to them to listen and be empathetic toward their situation? That doesn’t mean you have to agree with them, but you should give them your ear.

Instead, we have a county commissioner that gloats over what he believes to be a victory over his constituents that disagree with him. That is behavior unbecoming of your office. In fact, it is hardly becoming of a middle schooler (seeing as most of them have shed the “nanny-nanny-boo-boo” mentality by then). The arrogance and contempt you hold for the people you represent is appalling. Try using a little humility once in a while. It goes a long way, and even if someone disagrees with you, they’ll go away feeling like you’ve listened to them. You have lost touch with the people of Hennepin County. I wish I could say this was an isolated incident. You’ve already proved that you’re willing to fall on your sword for Bottineau. I guess that goes hand in hand with burning bridges with the common folk, while you please the Met Council. Oh yeah… $26 Million still doesn’t add up to the $1 Billion plus you will need to finish the line. So your celebration is both disgusting and premature.

For your hubris, arrogance, lack of empathy, and for taunting your constituents on social media…

Mike Opat, you should apologize (but you won’t).
