Save the Chickens!
In a vote that is scheduled to take place at next Tuesday’s Crystal City Council meeting, Council members will decide on whether you can own chickens in the Crysal city limits, or not. I bet you didn’t even know this was an issue. The truth is, no one does. A certain Crystal resident owns some chickens, not a rooster that crows every dawn, but some chickens. There is one neighbor that doesn’t like the idea. That one neighbor believes that she (and she alone) can make a decision for the entire city.
Why chickens? Well, as you’ve probably noticed, the price of food has increased over the past 12 months, eggs included. We should all be looking for ways to become more self-sufficient, as that how Americans did so well for so many years. Also, owning a couple chickens is a great learning opportunity for children to take care of something and build character and responsibility. Chickens are not noisy, and it’s proven that they are good for the environment. In fact, acresusa.com says that homegrown chickens are not only better treated than their counterparts in industrial chicken coops, but their manure is useful in composting, and chicken scratching is good for the soil and plant life. Robbinsdale, New Hope, and Minneapolis all allow chickens.
Why the big deal then? Because the majority on Crystal’s City Council will use any opportunity to take a complaint (even a single one) to control people in the name of “the good of the community”.
Please plan on showing up to Crystal City Hall (4141 Douglas Dr.) on Tuesday, July 19th at 7 pm to speak on behalf of chickens and your self-empowerment. More to come!
