Crystal’s Police Budget

We think everyone of all political stripes will agree that a police department is a local necessity and a legitimate government function.  However, the size of the police department in Crystal is something that never gets scrutinized or questioned.

Here are some highlights;

Crystal has the following

*Police chief

*Deputy police chief

*Two Lieutenants

*Four Sergeants

*Twenty-two police officers

*Juvenile specialist

*A Records office manager

*Three office assistants

*A Support Services Technician

*Four Community Services Officers

And now there are the volunteers

*Twelve Reserve Officers

*Nine Police Explorers

Now even though we agree that police are necessary, does it have to be at this level?  Do we really “need” eight officers in charge of 22?  Wouldn’t putting more boots on the ground be a better use of our money?  Do we really “need” three office assistants and a juvenile specialist?

This is NOT an attack on the police department or on police officers.  This is a question about how many people we NEED versus how many we WANT.  If we are going to have an honest budget debate, everything has to be on the table.  In addition, we have a joint fire department with New Hope so why can’t we have a joint police department as well?
