1) Education

-Notes from the School District 281 Systems Accountability Meeting:

 • Many teachers are not happy- they are forced to continue passing students who aren’t learning anything. They are relegated to behavior management.
 • Students are being judged by incorrect standards in kindergarten assessments, which is falsely being perceived as an achievement gap. Various socio-economic variables are not being considered.
 • Studies are starting to show that any advantages gained by putting a child into all-day kindergarten are lost by third grade.
 • 20% of 281’s budget is spent on benefits. That is a 17% increase over 4 years.
 • 281 is considering re-opening one of the schools it just closed as a magnet school, possibly a science or technology school. District attendance has not gone back up since the closings. The costs of preparing the school, buying curriculum, hiring staff, and transporting students across the district will be quite large.

2) Transportation-

 • Bottineau Boulevard Partnership has plans on their website for their future light rail aspirations. These plans involve shrinking the width of city streets, losing lanes from major roads like Broadway and Lyndale. Intersections will be affected, as the train runs down the middle of these streets. Also, some two-way streets would become one-way. More to come on this issue.
